“Tuesdays With 2 Chainz” is a recuring feature in which the author takes a moment to discuss what is new in the life of rapper 2 Chainz or bless the public with assorted bits of 2 Chainz trivia.
If you’re just one of those bandwagon 2 Chainz fans then you probably thought 2 Chainz has always gone by 2 Chainz. This couldn’t be more wrong. The Atlanta rapper has been making music for over 15 years and has only gone by 2 Chainz for about two of those years.
He used to go by Tity Boi.
Well, the only thing more amazing than listening to 2 Chainz rap is listening to 2 Chainz explain things. So I’ll be providing you with 2 Chainz explanation of why he switched his name from Tity Boi to 2 Chainz.
2 Chainz talking to the radio station Shade 45:
“This is the universal answer, I just came up with it yesterday over a big bowl of kush for breakfast. I thought of it yesterday morning, check it out. I go by Tity Boi, let me run this to ya’ll, I’m one half of Playaz Circle. I did a song called ‘Duffle Bag Boyz’ in ’07 with Lil Weezy. I was signed to DTP/Def Jam and all that. And so people ask me where the 2 Chainz came from I tell them I always talk about jewelry and I always been saying 2 Chainz in a lot of my songs. But lately like the last year or so I’ve been saying it in introducing my records like ‘2 Chainz!’ and kinda making it family friendly.”
I think we can all agree that the first sentence and last sentence are the two most interesting things said in this response.
-The guy claimed to come up with his name, which people all over the world mimic using his southern drawl, while eating a “big bowl of kush for breakfast.” It’s a little unclear whether he came up with the “universal answer” or the actual name 2 Chainz, but I would say that’s not nearly as important as figuring out this whole “big bowl of kush” thing.
Was it really in a bowl? Did he actually ingest it orally? Did he really eat it “for” breakfast or just kind of have it on the side accompanying his eggs benedict or Apple Jacks?
-He claims that the name makes him more “family friendly.”
Let’s take a step back: This is a lyric from one of 2 Chainz most popular songs, “No Lie”:
“I take yo girl and kidnap her, feed her to my mattress.
A skeleton in my closet, probably one of these dead ass rappers.
It’s probably one of these pu**y ass ni**as, don’t try me, I’ll pull the trigger.”
I think he has some work to do before he is considered “family friendly”.
2 Chainz talking to RadioStreet.com:
I think the way I actually say it, “2 Chainz” and drag it out, makes it kid-friendly and lady-friendly and for the most part, today I came up with another answer because everybody asks me this on every interview, I just feel like 2 Chainz can also stand for, me coming out in 2007 with “Duffle Bag Boy” , “2 Chainz” could also be my second chance at the same time. I’m saying I’m making the best out of my situation, and we outchea.
-This is one long incoherent ramble that barely comes close to responding to the question. This gets us almost nowhere in our examination of his name change, but it does show a great way to end a conversation before it becomes obvious that you have no idea what you’re talking about: finish off your rambling with the phrase “we outchea.” If the other person tries to continue the dialogue simply tell them “I SAID, we outchea.”
2 Chainz explaining to RapBasement.com:
I did a song called “Dear Mr. LA Reid” and someone else said Tity/2 Chainz and I had been saying it all the time but I guess the stars lined up and then definitely the way I said, the delivery, 2 Chainz made it lady and kid friendly. In my 8th grade yearbook picture I had on 2 chains. I had always been into like jewelry so 2 Chainz just stuck.
-The guy followed up explaining that someone once called him Tity/2 Chainz with the statement that “the stars lined up.” It’s good to know that the stars line up for this sort of thing. It goes to show that astronomy is something I have still yet to grasp.
-I’m ending this post with one demand: SOMEONE FIND THAT 8TH GRADE PHOTO!
